UPS Partners with CEES to Train Physics Teacher Trainees on New Curriculum
The Uganda Physics Society (UPS) has collaborated with the College of Education and External Studies (CEES) at Makerere University to conduct a training workshop for physics teacher trainees on the new Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC). This initiative is part of the UPS’s commitment to enhancing physics education and equipping future educators with the necessary skills to implement the new pedagogical approach effectively.
The training, facilitated by experienced members of the Uganda Physics Society, focused on shifting from the traditional knowledge-based approach to a more hands-on, skills-oriented one. Participants were introduced to innovative teaching methods, including problem-based learning, practical laboratory work, and the use of modern technological tools to make physics more engaging and relevant to students’ lives.
Mr. Nsubuga Joseph, the President of the UPS, highlighted the importance of this training. “The new curriculum challenges us to not just teach theories, but to nurture critical thinking and problem-solving skills in our students. This training is a crucial step in ensuring that our future teachers are well-prepared to meet this challenge and inspire a new generation of innovators,” he said.
The workshop also addressed common challenges teachers face during the transition, such as limited resources and the need for a change in mindset. Facilitators from both UPS and CEES provided practical solutions and encouraged the teacher trainees to collaborate and share best practices to create a supportive learning community. This joint effort between the UPS and CEES is expected to significantly contribute to the successful implementation of the CBC in physics education across Uganda.
